ENVIRONMENTAL CAMPAIGNS: Covers awareness generation through camps, training programmes, rallies, poster competition etc.
DESI has adopted environmental awareness and interventions as a priority activity due to the increasing global warming. Awareness has been generated through camps, training programmes etc. DESI adopts integrated approach in project implementation and incorporates environmental dimensions wherever needed. DESI adopts a scientific approach as our action programmes are preceded by surveys and consultations. We have surveyed the working conditions of polluting garment and meat industries located in NCR, Sahibabad and Hapur regions of Ghaziabad district. The dye industries currently use wood for their heating purposes causing air pollution. The waste water after dyeing processes is sent to drainage and river beds. Similarly, meat factories pollute the ground water leading to skin rashes for those unfortunate population who depend on hand-pumps for drinking water purposes. In majority of the panchayats, hand-pumps are the normal mode of drinking water. AWARENESS TOPICS: The need for arresting global warming by preventing pollution and greater use of renewable sources of energy and Sustainable agriculture was emphasized in our work with target communities. Regular campaigns have been conducted in rural & urban areas in U.P., Haryana and Delhi. We organized rural workshops on the importance of sustainable agriculture and renewable energy technologies and the need for people’s participation in protecting the environment. Forestry Sector Development: An action plan for U.P.’s 10 forest districts involving trained human resources (MSWs, Sociologists, Economists) was developed on behalf of U.P. Forest Dept. for revamping the forestry sector livelihoods through formation of SHGs, environment friendly micro-enterprises. 32 trained professionals’ profiles were shortlisted and submitted to Forest Dept.
